Satin Bowerbird
Blue is the favourite colour of the Australian Satin Bowerbird (Ptilonorhynchus violaceus). The male has a dark blue coloured coat and intensive shining blue eyes. It builds a bower from twigs and grass that is also decorated with blue (sometimes yellow) objects: with natural material such as feathers, shells, berries but also with household rubbish such as glas, pieces of plastic, parts of toys. The bower is not a nest but rather a 'display area' in order to attract the female of the species. Once the female approaches the bower, the male begins a wild performance: prancing around, plucking his feathers, and emenating squealing, whistling, cooing and whirring sounds. Satin powerbirds imitate the voices of other birds in the vicinity.
